August 15, 2022We get a lot of questions about our shipping policies and pricing. So, we thought we’d put it all in one place to make it easier to find and, most importantly, easier to understand.
The details about our shipping.
By now we’re all so used to ordering everything online that it may seem like no big deal. Just click and your item magically arrives on your doorstep — sometimes even within hours. But shipping a delicate, perishable product like frozen meat is a bit more complicated than say, a shirt from your favorite store. Read on for more details on our shipping policies and pricing.
To ensure that our meat arrives still frozen, it has to be packed in an insulated container with enough dry ice to last the trip. However, dry ice only lasts so long, especially if you live in a hotter climate or it’s the middle of summer (hello, heat wave!), so we have to make sure your order arrives at your door within 3 days.
This isn’t an issue for most customers in the West and Central US as our distribution center is located on the West Coast and ground shipping is usually more than adequate. If you live on the East Coast though, we have to upgrade your order to two-day air service. As you can imagine, this is more costly.
We also used to have a $150 cart minimum for any purchase. This was partly because we were subsidizing a portion of the shipping to help keep the cost to you minimal. However, we understand this is a high threshold and many of you, especially first time customers, have requested we remove that.
Now, there is no minimum cart order — you can buy exactly what you want, when you want. Check out our new shipping zones and prices below.
New shipping zones, pricing and transit times.
Note: Overnight shipping is the only option available to residents of Alaska and Hawaii. Overnight orders to AK and HI are only shipped on Mondays and Tuesdays. Transit times do not include processing time.
A note about transit times:
To avoid the risk of your order being stuck in limbo over the weekend, we only ship out on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Depending on when you placed your order and what zone you’re in, your meat should arrive within 3-7 days of ordering. For example, if you order on a Thursday, your order will ship the following Monday. If however, you order on a Sunday, your order will go out the next day, excluding holidays. Questions? Contact us and we’d be happy to help.
FAQs
What happened to free shipping on orders over $250?
We were offering free shipping on all orders over $250 as a way to help our customers get more value for their money. We covered the shipping costs and you were able to spend your money on a tangible item, rather than a service fee.
We are still offering free shipping on orders between $250 and $500 for people living in our Ground Shipping Zones, however, due to the rising cost of two-day air service to the East Coast, we can no longer offer that promotion in that area.
We are always looking for ways to provide more value for our customers so stay tuned for our new subscription boxes!
Why does shipping cost more in some zones?
The further away from our distribution center, the more it costs to ship our product. If you live on the East Coast, we have no choice but to send your order via 2-day air service. This is the only way to ensure your meat will get to you safely within the 3-day window. As you can imagine, it costs a lot more to ship something via airplane than it does via ground.
Changing our shipping policies was not a decision we came to lightly as we knew that it would adversely affect our customers living farthest from our distribution center. We have held out on doing so for as long as we could (despite the guidance of our advisors) because we want as many people to be able to access our meats as possible. However, our previous model had us both subsidizing the cost of shipping and covering the cost to replace orders that arrived late, which was an unsustainable path, especially in light of the rising costs hitting every aspect of our business. We understand this may mean some of our East Coast customers will no longer be able to purchase from us. Know that this was not a decision we came to lightly. We are working on a distribution solution that will allow us to service customers in the eastern regions more efficiently and economically but that is realistically a few years away.
Why do I need to contact you for rates if my order is over $500?
The heavier a package is, the more it generally costs to ship. And frozen meat tends to weigh a lot. That said, we want to make sure that you are paying the lowest possible shipping rates for your product.
While our shipping calculator is currently based on weight (which is a good gauge generally) a steak might weigh less than a pound of ground but cost more. So if you are placing a large order, we want to be sure we’re calculating shipping to your advantage.
What does the shipping cost include?
Our shipping costs are calculated to include the following:
- Cost of materials including insulated packaging and dry ice
- Labor costs associated with picking packing, and shipping your order
- Cost of transportation and delivery or your order
