Summer's here, and while we're excited about sunny days and backyard barbecues, the warmer weather can be tough when it comes to shipping perishable meats. We know how important it is for you to receive your Honest Bison order in perfect condition, so we've modified our shipping procedures to ensure your meats arrive as fresh as the moment they were packed. We’ve also included a few tips you can follow to help ensure things go smoothly on your end.
Our enhanced summer shipping procedures
To combat the summer heat, we've doubled the amount of dry ice in each package. This extra precaution helps maintain the perfect temperature for your meats during transit, ensuring they arrive at your doorstep in top-notch condition.
We also monitor extreme weather alerts. If a heatwave is likely to occur in your area, we may delay shipments so your order arrives safely. Your patience is appreciated as we work to guarantee the highest-quality product reaches you.
In some instances, such as a holiday weekend, we may even upgrade orders to faster shipping service free of charge to prevent boxes from being stuck in transit over a long weekend.
Tips for safe delivery in hotter climates
Upgrade to faster shipping.
If you live in a particularly hot climate, consider upgrading to one of our faster shipping options. It’s a small investment for peace of mind and will mean your meats spend less time in transit. This is also a great idea if you have a special event coming up that you need your order for.
Track your package.
Keep an eye on your shipment's progress. As soon as it arrives, bring it inside immediately. You can also arrange to have it delivered to a location where someone can receive it right away, like your office or a neighbor's house.
Delivery instructions.
Direct UPS to leave your shipment in a shady or covered location to keep it out of direct sunlight. This simple step can make a big difference.

What to do if your package arrives thawed
Even with all precautions, sometimes things go awry. If your package arrives thawed or the dry ice has melted (because all ice melts eventually!), don't worry. Here’s what you should do:
- Assess the meat's temperature: If the meat is still cold to the touch (below 40°F), it's safe to refreeze or refrigerate.
- Refreeze or refrigerate immediately: Place your meats in the freezer or refrigerator as soon as possible.
